A practical refresher course for people renewing a current NZQA unit-standard-based First Aid Certificate. Refresh your essential first aid knowledge and demonstrate that your practical skills remain current.
Description
Refresh your first aid knowledge, practise essential skills and stay confident responding to an emergency.
This course combines approximately 1.5 hours of required online pre-learning with 4.5 hours of face-to-face practical training and assessment. You’ll revisit important first aid techniques, receive guidance from an experienced facilitator and demonstrate that your skills remain current.
Successful learners will receive a First Aid Revalidation Certificate. No new NZQA unit standards are awarded or reported through this course.
What you'll learn
During this course, you will refresh your knowledge and practical skills in:
- Recognising an emergency and calling for appropriate help
- Applying the DRSABCD action plan
- Performing CPR and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Responding to choking and airway obstructions
- Managing life-threatening bleeding and shock
- Placing an unresponsive person in the recovery position
- Responding to common injuries and medical emergencies
- Managing a first aid situation safely and confidently
Course content will reflect the certificate being revalidated.
Who should attend
This course is for people who hold a current:
- Foundation First Aid Certificate, or
- New Zealand First Aid Certificate
You can also attend during the three-month grace period following your certificate’s expiry date.
This course is ideal for workplace first aiders and anyone who needs to keep their first aid certification and practical skills current.
What you need to know
Your existing first aid certificate must be current or no more than three months past its expiry date. If it expired more than three months ago, you will need to complete the relevant full first aid course again.
Before attending, you must:
- Complete approximately 1.5 hours of online pre-learning
- Provide evidence of your current or recently expired first aid certificate if requested
- Participate in all practical activities and assessments
As part of the assessment, you must kneel on the floor and demonstrate CPR on a manikin. Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for floor-based activities.

We offer scheduled public courses at selected locations across the lower and central North Island.
In-service training may also be available for workplaces and groups in Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and the East Coast, subject to minimum participant numbers and facilitator availability.
