Build the practical skills and confidence to help when someone needs first aid.

Through practical, hands-on learning, you will learn how to recognise an emergency, provide immediate first aid and support an injured or unwell person until further help arrives.

This course covers basic life support, CPR, AED use, choking, life-threatening bleeding, shock, common injuries and medical emergencies.

The course includes face-to-face learning and practical assessment. Learners who successfully complete the course will achieve:

  • Unit Standard 6402 – Provide basic life support
  • Unit Standard 6401 – Provide first aid

What you'll learn


During this course, you will learn how to:

  • Recognise an emergency and call for appropriate help
  • Apply the DRSABCD action plan
  • Provide CPR for adults, children and infants
  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Respond to choking and airway obstructions
  • Manage life-threatening bleeding and shock
  • Place an unresponsive person in the recovery position
  • Provide first aid for burns, fractures, dislocations, soft-tissue injuries and poisoning
  • Recognise and respond to medical emergencies, including heart attack, asthma, stroke, seizures and diabetes

  • Anyone learning first aid for the first time
  • People wanting practical first aid skills for home or community settings
  • Employees who need to achieve NZQA Unit Standards 6402 and 6401
  • Workplace first aiders where this level of training has been identified as appropriate by their employer
  • People whose previous first aid certificate has expired and who need to complete the full course again

What you need to know


No previous first aid training or experience is required.

Learners must be able to participate in practical activities and demonstrate CPR on a manikin positioned on the floor. This requires kneeling and performing repeated chest compressions.

Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for floor-based activities.

Locations and training options


We offer scheduled public courses at selected locations across the lower and central North Island.

In-service training may also be available for workplaces and groups in Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and the East Coast, subject to minimum participant numbers and facilitator availability.
