Build on the Foundation First Aid course by learning how to manage a first aid emergency involving multiple people. This 12-hour course covers NZQA Unit Standards 6402, 6401 and 6400 and is the industry-recommended first aid certificate for workplace first aiders.

Description


Develop the practical skills and confidence to provide first aid and manage a more complex emergency situation.

The New Zealand First Aid Certificate includes everything covered in Foundation First Aid, together with additional training in managing an emergency involving multiple injured or unwell people.

Through hands-on learning and realistic scenarios, you’ll learn how to assess hazards, prioritise care and manage the overall situation until further help arrives.

This course includes 12 hours of face-to-face learning and assessment, delivered over 1.5 days. Learners who successfully complete the course will achieve:

  • Unit Standard 6402 – Provide basic life support
  • Unit Standard 6401 – Provide first aid
  • Unit Standard 6400 – Manage first aid in an emergency situation

What you'll learn


During this course, you will learn how to:

  • Apply the DRSABCD action plan
  • Provide CPR for adults, children and infants
  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Respond to choking and airway obstructions
  • Manage life-threatening bleeding and shock
  • Place an unresponsive person in the recovery position
  • Respond to burns, fractures, dislocations, soft-tissue injuries and poisoning
  • Recognise and respond to common medical emergencies
  • Assess an emergency scene and identify potential hazards
  • Manage an emergency involving multiple injured or unwell people
  • Assess and manage major injuries, including chemical and electrical burns, head or suspected spinal injuries, crush injuries, internal injuries, impalement, stabbing, gunshot wounds and amputations
  • Respond to severe allergic reactions and heat- or cold-related emergencies
  • Monitor and manage the overall situation until further help arrives

  • Anyone wanting comprehensive first aid skills for work or the community
  • People whose previous first aid certificate expired more than three months ago and who need to complete the full course again

What you need to know


No previous first aid training or experience is required when completing all three unit standards as part of this combined course.

The course includes practical activities, simulated emergency scenarios and assessment. Learners must attend the full 12 hours and successfully demonstrate the required knowledge and practical first aid skills.

Learners must be able to kneel on the floor and physically demonstrate CPR on a manikin. Please wear comfortable clothing and closed footwear suitable for practical and floor-based activities.

We offer scheduled public courses at selected locations across the lower and central North Island.

In-service training may also be available for workplaces and groups in Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and the East Coast, subject to minimum participant numbers and facilitator availability.
